چکیده

The fluctuating bed shear stress has largely been investigated only for the conditions of uniform channel flows and boundary layers. In practical engineering, the flow conditions are often modified due to the presence of various hydraulic structures. To what extent the modification affects the known characteristics of the bed shear stress is not clear. This study presents experimental results of the bed shear stress fluctuations, which are obviously subjected to external turbulence generated by superimposing artificial structures in the open channel flows. The statistical analysis of the measurements shows that the probability density function of the bed shear stress can be described by the lognormal function. Some associated relations concerning higher-order moments, skewness and kurtosis, which are derived from the lognormal function, are further compared with the experimental data. Physical implication of the skewed probability density distribution is finally discussed.

Investigation of the Bed and Structural Slopes on Bed Shear Stress and Flow Characteristics around an Impermeable Groyne

In this paper, effects of the cross shore and groyne wall slopes on flow parameters around an impermeable groyne were considered using a three-dimensional numerical CFD model (i.e., FLUENT). The k-ε turbulence model was used to evaluate the Reynolds stresses. The model was first applied to a vertical groyne on a flat bed and the model results were compared with the relevant experimental data. T...

Near-bottom shear stresses in a small, highly stratified estuary

[1] This paper examines near-bottom shear stresses at two locations in a small, highly stratified estuary: the Navesink River, New Jersey, USA. The shear stresses obtained from acoustic Doppler current profilers (ADCPs) operating in the recently developed mode 11 at a high spatial resolution are examined in detail. Measurement noise of the ADCP is estimated using autocorrelation analyses and is...

Evaluation of bedload transport subject to high shear stress fluctuations

Many formulas available in the literature for computing sediment transport rates are often expressed in terms of time-mean variables such as time-mean bed shear stress or flow velocity, while effects of turbulence intensity, e.g., bed shear stress fluctuation, on sediment transport were seldom considered. This may be due to the fact that turbulence fluctuation is relatively limited in laborator...

بررسی عددی سه بعدی الگوی جریان و تنش برشی بستر اطراف پایه های مخروطی

Investigation of the flow pattern around bridge piers is of utmost importance because of its great effect on destruction of the piers. Despite the hydrodynamical and structural values of designing sections causing minimum turbulence against the flow passing the bridge pier, a review of the literature shows that investigation of the flow pattern around bridge piers with varying section has not b...

A traversing system to measure bottom boundary layer hydraulic properties

This study describes a new convenient and robust system developed to measure benthic boundary layer properties, with emphasis placed on the determination of bed shear stress and roughness height distribution within estuarine systems by using velocity measurements. This system consisted of a remotely operated motorised traverser that allowed a single ADV to collect data between 0 and 1 m above t...
